Java, circa 1860-1870
Unidentifed photographer

Mangkunegaran was a small monarchy, established by the Dutch in the 18th century, centered around the city of Surakarta (colloquially called Solo) on the island of Java in Indonesia. Tis studio portrait of Pangeran (Prince) Jayakusuma, taken by an unknown photographer in the late 1860s or early 1870s, shows the proud prince clearly at ease in front of the camera and provides a compelling picture aristocratic aplomb and authority.
