The original caption of this image reads “Fujiyama from Kawaibashi Tokaido.” “Fujiyama” is a westernized pronunciation of the Japanese characters used to represent Mt. Fuji. “Kawaibashi” consists of the word “Kawai” (the name of a small village?) and the word “bashi” (the pronunciation for the character that represents the English word “bridge”?) “Tokaido” was one of the most important roads in 19th century Japan, connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto.
